Tony was introduced to badminton at the age of 5 by his parents who were both provincial level players. Under the watchful eye of his father, Tony and his brother Ferry, became top level juniors and trained at a small two court facility that their dad owned in Surabaya. As a young player, Tony become the top ranked singles player in Indonesia. In his early teens, Tony even thought of quitting badminton, but instead he switched to playing doubles where he again excelled and was asked to join the famous Jaya Raya Badminton Club in Jakarta.

At Jaya Raya, Tony met and teamed up with Chandra Wijaya. From Jaya Raya, Tony moved onto the Indonesian National Team and become one of the most decorated doubles players in the history of badminton.
